The Twin Towers – A Prayer

Almighty God, Creator of all things

Hear our petition. Take away our faith

And our belief in You, but most of all

Our certain knowledge of the life to come,

Where You’ll exalt the good and burn the bad.

Your gift of faith has had some mixed results.

Desire for paradise and fear of hell

Seem to have caused a deal more harm than good.

We beg You, take faith back.  Let us suppose

There is no God, this life is all we’ll have,

That Earth holds the rewards for which we strive,

That here are all our happiness and pain.

Hades may come as something of a shock,

But Heaven will be a wonderful surprise

And multitudes, in unexpected bliss,

With everlasting joy shall sing Your praise –

Just as you must have planned for all along.

You can’t deny You’ve made mistakes before

And taken stabs at trying to put them right

With floods and plagues and crucifying Your Son;

Your Bible has already spilled the beans.

Humbly we pray You, try a fresh approach;

Just make us certain You do not exist,

Delude us so we think that death’s the end.

If we don’t change you always can revert

To floods and plagues and prophets; at a pinch,

Worse comes to worst, another Son or two,

Though you may feel that gambit’s had its day.

It’s worth a go; what have you got to lose?
