I saw an interesting commercial on the
cable sports channel ESPN this morning. It said: "Without
sports there would be no next year." I think they might be
right—at least in America.
The Super Bowl is over and yet another distraction for the mob is
satisfied for a few months until the next gladiator season starts in
the fall. Yeah, there's a lot of Raider fans out there who won't
soon forget the thrashing their "heroes" were dealt at the
hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers--a team hailing from the same
"God-inspired" state that gave us the infamous "chad"
and handed the presidency to a man who lost the popular election by
more than a half-million votes, and consequently also gave us an
Attorney General who had lost to a dead man in his own bid for the
Senate--and there is going to be a lot of questioning, a lot of
blaming, a lot of what-ifs to be philosophized over countless
martinis, lagers and lattes.
But not to worry, because there are plenty of other distractions
available to occupy our minds so that we may forget the "imminent
threat" of nuclear annihilation that is forever looming over our
nation by a rogue tyrant bent on our destruction; a dictator who has
his sizable arsenal of long-range nuclear warheads pointed directly at
a city near you--and he could 'push the button' at any moment and kill
us all if we don't do something NOW! This monster has his
battleships, nuclear submarines, and aircraft carriers sitting just
off our coast, along with tens of thousands of evil troops deployed
near our borders who can’t wait to start pillaging our cities,
murdering our women and children, and perhaps even stealing our
gas-guzzling SUVs!
This out-of-control imperialist state has a heinous track record of
military strong-arming throughout its history, to include hostile
takeovers of sovereign nations, germ warfare, wholesale genocide of
entire indigenous tribal cultures, and on one occasion even use of
nuclear bombs that killed 200,000 people, nearly all of whom were
innocent civilians. Just since World War II this rogue state has
deployed its armed forces on foreign soil no less than 75 times, and
spent uncounted billions of dollars in both covert and overt
operations to assassinate foreign leaders; set up vassal puppet
states; fix foreign "democratic" elections in the interests
of "freedom" and "self-determination"; provide
weapons of mass destruction to known genocidal dictators, who in turn
used those weapons to murder their own people as well as neighboring
peoples. This nation has even armed, trained and supported known
terrorist organizations, and so long as these factions had the
“approved” targets in their sights they were called "freedom
fighters"—it was not until their targets changed that they were
demoted back to “terrorists.” This is the only nation ever
to be convicted by the World Court for acts of state terrorism and
ordered to "cease and desist" with the atrocities, but
rather than comply with the court, this tyrannical government
responded by increasing its terrorist activities! This nation
spends nearly 400 billion dollars per annum on military
advancement; it has over a million troops stationed on four
continents; its naval vessels patrol every ocean; and it even has
dreams of placing an arsenal of nuclear warheads in orbit where they
can more effectively "keep the peace" within minutes
anywhere on the planet.
Who would not be fearful of such things? Who would not wish to
defend themselves by whatever means necessary against a nation with
such a track record? Indeed, as a country “blessed by God”
is it not our responsibility to display our resolve and protect
ourselves preemptively, before we are attacked?
But do not fear, my friends, because Big Brother is there to protect
us from these "clear and present dangers," and so long as we
each do our patriotic duty by not questioning what is best for us,
everything will be just peachy and we can all look forward to sitting
down with friends and family next year to watch the epic battle for
world supremacy at the Meggidodome, er, the Superdome. Because that
is what freedom is really all about, don'cha know--protecting those
cherished comforts we have all come to take for granted even as more
than a billion people on the planet live at the poverty level, and
where each day in the developing world more than 30,000 children die
from preventable and treatable causes such as starvation, diarrhea,
respiratory infections, measles and malaria.
And is it not our right to look out for "num-bah one" even
if this means stepping on the necks of those who dare think that they
too might have a right to look out for their own interests, or presume
to defend themselves against invasion or subversion by rogue nations
such as this one, whose insatiable appetite for wealth, power and
control of every natural resource on the planet leaves it "no
alternative" but to employ the "humanitarian
intervention" that the world has come to expect from this nation,
to include "strategic" carpetbombing (from 30 thousand
feet); destruction of "soft targets" like water treatment
& sanitation systems, power plants, agricultural production, and
medical facilities; "precision-guided missiles" that
invariably vaporize such "unintended targets" as wedding
parties and Red Cross shelters; and may even include nuclear weapons,
the use of which this tyrannical leader says “cannot be ruled out as
an option.”
"A nation never falls but by suicide," wrote Emerson.
And as the Bush administration hawks march on with their Iraqi agenda
in defiance of the reverberating fear, anger and uncertainty such
imperialist warmongering incites in the international community—and
demonstrating a sickening apathy to the horrific consequences such a
war will have for millions of Iraqi civilians—I can begin
to appreciate Emerson's prophetic words, because if we don't pull our
heads out of our collective Johnny bums soon and put a stop to the
insanity dripping from the Oral Orifice and Pentagram, our children
may become the "collateral damage" of tomorrow, and our once
great nation may one day wake up to find that The World has had
enough, and that there is no "next year" for our
favorite sports distractions.
